Dance Australia will launch its first-ever junior magazine this November, introducing readers aged 6–12 to the artists, performances and possibilities of dance.
Created for curious young dancers, Dance Junior combines interviews and behind-the-scenes stories with dance tips, fashion, quizzes and collectables. As editor, I’m excited to share a project that gives our youngest readers a magazine of their own, whether they’re already spending afternoons in the studio or just beginning to discover dance.
A special feature on The Nutcracker takes readers into a world of snowflakes, stage magic and backstage secrets. Across the magazine, ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, hip hop and musical theatre offer plenty of scope to explore familiar favourites and discover something new.
Dancer interviews and profiles sit alongside dance vocabulary, dancewear tips and studio must-haves. The ‘Boys Only’ section includes advice from male dancers and dancewear guidance for boys, while puzzles, colouring-in, competitions and giveaways invite readers to get involved. A collectable poster and MDM Ballet Trading Cards are also included.
I’m particularly pleased that we’re making something children can hold in their hands. There’s a pleasure in turning the pages, finding a favourite story and returning to it, or tackling a quiz with a friend. A printed magazine gives children a reason to step away from screens and spend time reading, thinking and following their interests at their own pace. It’s something to tuck into a dance bag, share between classes or pore over at home.
For teachers, parents, grandparents and friends, Dance Junior offers a way to encourage a young dancer’s curiosity, or introduce a child to dance for the first time. Its November launch also makes it a timely option for end-of-year gifts and Christmas stockings.
