Australia’s own Georgina Hopson has been announced as the star of ANASTASIA, which will have its Australian premiere at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre in December 2025 before touring to Perth and Sydney in 2026.
Hopson, known for her standout performances in Titanique and The Phantom of the Opera, will take on the role of Anya in the hit Broadway musical. “I can’t quite believe that I am going to be playing Anya in ANASTASIA – I have loved this story and this character since I was a kid. I used to dress up as her and sing Journey to the Past on the trampoline. I wish I could tell my younger self that this was happening, I think she would have passed out with excitement – which is honestly how I still feel about it!” said Hopson.
Based on the legendary tale of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov and the beloved 20th Century Fox animated film, ANASTASIA is brought to life on stage by the Tony Award-winning team of Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. The sweeping story follows a brave young woman’s search for home, love and family, set against a backdrop that moves from Imperial Russia to 1920s Paris.
Hopson’s extensive stage credits include Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera (Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour), Rose Dewitt-Bukater in Titanique (Michael Cassel Group), and acclaimed roles in Jagged Little Pill, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Jekyll & Hyde, and Bananaland. She received the Green Room Award for her performance in Ragtime and has also appeared on screen in Hoges: The Paul Hogan Story, Doctor Doctor and Bump.
Directed by Tony Award-winning director Darko Tresnjak, ANASTASIA premiered on Broadway in 2017 and has since toured internationally to great acclaim. With a book by five-time Tony Award winner Terrence McNally and a score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, the musical has won more than 15 international awards and has been described as “captivating, beautifully staged and emotionally vital” (The Hollywood Reporter).
