Dance Australia has launched Aussies Overseas, a new print and online series celebrating Australian dancers working internationally.
The series will profile dancers across a broad range of styles and career paths, recognising that an international dance career can take many forms. We want to hear from Australians working with ballet and contemporary companies, in musical theatre and commercial dance, on cruise ships, in cabaret and showgirl productions, circus, jazz and other professional performance settings.
Each profile will look beyond the job title to the dancer behind it: where they trained, how they made the move overseas, what their working life looks like now, and what they have learned from building a career away from home.
For Dance Australia, the project is also an opportunity to make visible just how widely Australian dancers are represented internationally. Some are performing with major companies and productions, while others are forging careers in parts of the industry that receive far less coverage despite employing Australian dancers around the world.
And we need your help finding them.
We are inviting dancers, teachers, studios, families, colleagues and friends to nominate Australians currently working professionally overseas. Dancers are also very welcome to nominate themselves.
Selected dancers will be featured online, with a number also appearing in upcoming print editions of Dance Australia.
Aussies Overseas is presented with the support of Burn The Floor, itself one of Australia’s great international dance success stories, with Australian dancers and creatives having been part of its global history for more than 25 years.
