More than 700 secondary school students from Canberra and the surrounding region will take to the stage for Ausdance ACT’s Youth Dance Festival, returning to Canberra Theatre Centre’s Playhouse from 27–29 October.

This year’s theme, The Metaverse, invites students to explore the relationship between digital and physical life through choreography and theatrical storytelling. Gaming, social media and virtual connection provide starting points for works examining how technology shapes the way young people move, communicate and connect.

“The festival showcases original works and choreography highlighting the creativity, diversity, and talent of local young people,” said creative director Dr Cathy Adamek.

For more than four decades, the festival has been part of the ACT’s arts and education calendar. Its inclusive, non-competitive format gives students opportunities to choreograph and perform original work in a professional theatre, with collaboration and creative expression central to the program.

Aligned with the school curriculum, the festival supports young people’s involvement in dance as both creators and performers. Students develop their responses to a shared theme, bringing their own experiences and ideas to the stage.

Twenty-seven schools will participate across the three nights, with a different line-up each evening. Alongside Canberra schools, the program includes Monaro High School and Trinity Catholic College Goulburn, extending participation into the surrounding region.

Produced by Ausdance ACT, the festival is led by Adamek, with school coordination by Debora Di Centa and support from a team of local dance artist mentors.

Youth Dance Festival performances begin at 7pm on 27, 28 and 29 October. Tickets and each evening’s school line-up are available through Canberra Theatre Centre.
