Australian dancer Kyra Martynov has been named among the award recipients at the XV Moscow International Ballet Competition, receiving a Certificate in the Junior Girls Solo category.

Martynov, who was competing for Australia at the Bolshoi Theatre, advanced through the early rounds of the competition before being recognised by the jury in the final results. The Junior Girls Solo category was won by Crystal Huang from the United States, with Victoria Sokolova from Russia receiving Second Prize and Sakura Nagai from Japan receiving Third Prize.

For Martynov, the result marks a significant international achievement at one of ballet’s most prestigious competitions. Held every four years, the Moscow International Ballet Competition was founded in 1969 on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre and has long been regarded as a major platform for young dancers.

Born in Maitland, New South Wales, Martynov trained at Queensland Ballet Academy, where she achieved the highest overall examination result across all core subjects and was awarded the inaugural Li Cunxin Scholarship. She later moved to Russia to train at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, where she has recently completed her graduation exams.

During her time in Moscow, Martynov has performed the Classical Pas de Deux and variation, Masha in The Nutcracker, and the duet and variation from La Fille mal gardée. Before moving overseas, she trained with Queensland Ballet Academy for five years, performing classical, character and contemporary repertoire, including the principal couple in Paul Boyd’s Donizetti Variations. She also appeared with Ballet Theatre Queensland in Cinderella and Coppélia.

Martynov’s recognition places her within a small but notable history of Australians at the Moscow International Ballet Competition. Danilo Radojevic remains the only Australian dancer to have won the Gold Medal, achieving the distinction in 1977 at the age of 19. Marilyn Rowe and Kelvin Coe both received Silver Medals in 1973 and were also awarded the Iskusstvo Publishers’ Prize for Best Couple. David McAllister received a Bronze Medal in 1985, while his partner Elizabeth Toohey was awarded a special Award for Artistic Merit.

The Awards Ceremony for the XV Moscow International Ballet Competition was held on 5 July in the Beethoven Hall of the Bolshoi Theatre, followed by the Laureates’ Gala Concert on the Historic Stage.

Congratulates Kyra, on this outstanding achievement, we will be following your journey with great interest and support.
