The Australian Ballet has promoted Adam Elmes from Coryphée to Soloist following the closing performance of Christopher Wheeldon’s Oscar at New York City Center.
The promotion was announced backstage as dancers and crew gathered after the performance, bringing the company’s New York season to a celebratory close.
Artistic Director David Hallberg praised Elmes’ dedication and the respect he has earned within the company and among international audiences.
“Adam is a sensitive artist of exceptional dedication,” Hallberg said.
“Whether in daily class or his work on stage, Adam’s commitment across the company is deeply respected, and now, following our performances in the United States, this respect is shared by audiences around the world.”
During the New York season, Elmes performed both Dorian Gray and Lord Alfred “Bosie” Douglas in Oscar. He also appeared in Stephanie Lake’s Seven Days at City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival, demonstrating his range across narrative and contemporary work.
Born in Brisbane and raised in Sydney, Elmes began dance classes at eight. He trained at the Valerie Smith Stage School, Tanya Pearson Academy and The Australian Ballet School before joining The Australian Ballet in 2020. He was promoted to Coryphée in 2023.
His latest promotion follows his recognition as the winner of the 2025 Telstra Ballet Dancer Award.
