Ludwig Minkus (1826–1917) was an Austrian composer and violinist best known for his enduring contributions to 19th-century ballet. After early success as a performer and theatre musician, he found his greatest legacy in Russia, where he became a prolific ballet composer at the Imperial Theatres in St Petersburg and Moscow. Working closely with choreographers such as Marius Petipa, Minkus provided scores that combined lyrical melodies, buoyant rhythms, and a natural sense of danceability. His works include the beloved full-length ballets Don Quixote (1869) and La Bayadère (1877), which remain cornerstones of the classical repertoire. Though sometimes dismissed by critics of his time as light or formulaic, Minkus’s music has proven remarkably resilient on stage, its clarity and vitality continuing to support and inspire dancers more than a century later.
