What is the main lesson you learnt?
During my time at SDC PPY, I learnt the importance of developing a strong personal relationship with dance. The experience encouraged me to prioritise my own interests, curiosities, and long-term goals as an artist. Through this, I was able to establish a personal practice that supports both the sustainability of my career and the development of a unique artistic voice and skill set valued within professional environments.
I came to realise that my relationship with dance is the driving force behind my artistic career, and that it requires continual reflection, research, and growth. By questioning and deepening my understanding of why I dance, I have learned to see dance not only as an artistic medium, but also as a tool for personal development. It has helped me grow into a better version of myself while allowing me to maintain passion and purpose through both the highs and lows of the artistic journey.
How has your understanding of dance as an art form evolved during your full-time studies? Were there any particular moments or experiences that shifted your perspective?
During my full-time studies at PPY, my understanding of dance as an art form evolved through both the challenges and successes I experienced across the wide range of practices and styles we were exposed to. This diversity expanded my perception of what dance can be, while encouraging me to question many of the preconceived ideas I previously held about the art form.
One of the most impactful aspects of the course was witnessing each student develop their own artistic identity. As different pathways, interests, and creative voices began to emerge, I realised that dance is an incredibly open and versatile medium, with space for many perspectives and approaches. This shifted my understanding of dance from something that needed to fit a particular mould into something deeply personal, adaptable, and accessible to everyone.
Through this experience, I developed a deeper appreciation for individuality and for the many ways dance can be used to share, connect, and create meaning.
