What is your best memory of your full-time dance studies?

My time at The Australian Ballet School was one of the most formative chapters in my early ballet journey. What made it so special was the bond forged with my fellow students — a shared sense of passion and drive that created something truly rare. We were all striving, day after day, to become the best versions of ourselves. There was a camaraderie that ran deep, an energy in the studios that lifted us, pushed us, and held us accountable — especially on the days we felt we had nothing left to give.

Looking back, those years remain some of my most treasured. Many of the friends I trained with have gone on to lead incredible careers on stages around the world. Yet every time we reconnect, no matter how much time has passed, it feels like no time has gone by at all — we’re still those wide-eyed, determined young dancers, full of dreams and fire… albeit now with slightly stiffer joints and a few more wrinkles!

I’m so thankful for the friendships I made during that time — they shaped me, sustained me, and are one of the greatest gifts I took with me from those years.

How did your understanding of dance as an art form evolve during your full-time studies? Were there any specific moments or experiences that shifted your perspective?

To say that my understanding of classical ballet shifted upon joining the ABS is an understatement — it completely reshaped me as a dancer. Joining the full-time program was the first time I’d ever been in a class composed solely of men, which opened my eyes to the full breadth of male technique and the demands of a professional career. The School’s structured training syllabus provided every tool to grow and succeed. I’m deeply grateful to my teachers — their wisdom, guidance, and mantras continue to stay with me.
