For the first time in its history, The Australian Ballet School will perform in Brisbane, bringing its bold new season NOW to QUT Gardens Theatre from 12 – 13 September. Featuring over 67 full-time students, the three-performance season honours ballet’s traditions while stepping firmly into the future.

The program will spotlight Queensland-born talents Bronte and Yamina, both of whom began their early training in the state before earning a coveted place at The Australian Ballet School. Their inclusion highlights the depth of talent emerging from Queensland, with both dancers now thriving artistically and technically as they shape into outstanding young artists.

Audiences can expect a rich and varied program, from timeless classics to striking contemporary works. George Balanchine’s Scotch Symphony has been chosen to showcase the exceptional calibre of the students. Sacred in the ballet world, Balanchine’s works are rarely staged without permission from the Balanchine Trust, making this inclusion particularly significant.

Other program highlights include:

  • Lyra – a vivid blend of classical ballet and contemporary dance by acclaimed Australian choreographer Prue Lang.

  • A Dream Story – Lucas Jervies’ captivating exploration of memory, imagery, and transformation.

  • La Bayadère: Entrance of the Shades – Marius Petipa’s iconic “white act”, a breathtaking display of grace and beauty.

  • Otherwhere – Kevin Jackson’s exploration of rhythm, consciousness, and collective identity.

  • Echoes in Motion – Jackson’s evocative all-male cast work tracing the artistic growth and challenges of the male dancer’s journey.

Megan Connelly, Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet School, expressed her excitement about the Brisbane debut: “We’re absolutely thrilled to bring our extraordinary pre-professional students to Brisbane for the very first time. Following the incredible response to our 60th Anniversary interstate tour to the Sydney Opera House, it’s a joy to now share the passion, precision, and promise of these young dancers with Queensland audiences. NOW is both a tribute to ballet’s rich history and a thrilling glimpse into the future being shaped by the next generation of artists.”

NOW runs at QUT Gardens Theatre from 12 – 13 September 2025, with the opening night performance also available via live stream. Tickets are on sale now.
