Penelope Mullen’s latest work Danse Noir is set to sizzle in the Performance Space at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Brisbane next month.
Secret trysts, simmering jealousies and stark realities inhabit the apartment block in which the work is set. “Danse Noir centres around an apartment block from which the residents are pulled sharply into focus by the voyeuristic tendencies of the Landlord, played by Brian Lucas,” explains Mullen. “Within each apartment we find a window into the private meanderings of lost, lustful and predatory souls, yearning for connection through touch, skin and the illusion of love. While Blaque Bordello exposed the artifice of love and lust, Danse Noir provides a deeper insight into the characters’ motivations which drive their thirst for meaningful and/or casual liaisons.”
