West Australian Ballet has announced the appointment of Leanne Stojmenov as its next Artistic Director, a move that sees the celebrated former dancer return to where it all began.
Stojmenov’s connection with the company stretches back to the very start of her professional journey, when she joined West Australian Ballet as a 17-year-old dancer. Now, after an acclaimed international career, she returns to lead the company into its next chapter.
“As a proud West Australian, it’s an honour to lead this extraordinary company where my journey first began,” said Stojmenov. “I look forward to working alongside Executive Director Lauren Major and sharing this next chapter with our incredible artists and audiences across Western Australia and beyond.”
Stojmenov enjoyed an 18-year tenure with The Australian Ballet, including eight years as a Principal Artist. Her performances in lead roles across the globe earned her widespread recognition and an Australian Dance Award for her performance in Alexei Ratmansky’s Cinderella. She has worked with some of the world’s most esteemed choreographers, including Christopher Wheeldon, John Neumeier, Wayne McGregor and Sir Peter Wright.
Since retiring from the stage, she has remained a dedicated presence in the dance world, returning to Perth in 2024 to take on the role of Rehearsal Director at West Australian Ballet.
Chair of the Board Ingrid Puzey welcomed the announcement. “Leanne's appointment marks a historic and exciting moment for West Australian Ballet. As we approach our 75th Anniversary in 2027, we reflect on our rich history as Australia’s oldest continuous ballet company, one that strives to support, foster and showcase West Australian people and talent.”
“Together with Executive Director Lauren Major, we are all looking forward to supporting Leanne’s artistic vision.”
The appointment follows a competitive international search, with 38 applicants from around the world. Stojmenov will officially step into the role in January 2026.
