With a refugee crisis currently sweeping Europe and the issue of people seeking asylum continuing to divide Australia, Bianca Martin’s new work for Company Upstairs, From Afar on a Hill, could not be more timely. The work takes as its starting point the fact that every day judgments are made about who can and who cannot enter our borders, whether they are backpackers or refugees.
From Afar on a Hill is a participatory performance, immersing the audience in the experience. Through a series of interactive processes the audience’s own privileges are challenged before they are brought into a position of judgment… if they make the grade!
