RAD to pop up in Darling Harbour

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Australia will be presenting a special pop up event in Sydney’s Darling Harbour in September.

On Saturday 29 September, the RAD will bring the dance floor outside, to give the public a taste of its latest initiatives… and a chance to have a go themselves! With ballet demonstrations for the over 55s, performances from young RAD dancers and open ballet classes just for boys, there will be something for everyone.

The pop-up event will be the official launch of Silver SwansTM, branded ballet classes created especially for the over-55s to help improve mobility, posture, coordination and energy levels and, most importantly, impart the sense of well-being that dance brings.

Also on display will be the Academy’s latest classical ballet programme, Discovering Repertoire, with variations performed by local RAD students. This new performance-inspired programme gives students the opportunity to dance the steps they recognise to music they know and love from six popular ballets including Coppélia, Giselle, Paquita, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake.

There will also be opportunities to watch the professionals in action. Former principal dancer at The Australian Ballet and RAD’s Male Dance Ambassador Matthew Lawrence will be encouraging budding ballet boys with an open ballet class, and offering onlookers the chance to learn special choreography which has been created as part of Project B, the Academy’s initiative to widen access to dance for boys.

Later in the day, one of the students on the Professional Dancers’ Postgraduate Teaching Certificate (PDTPC) will be a special guest coach at the pop up event. The PDPTC is helping to fill a reported need in career options for our country’s professional dancers and allows candidates to study for a world-recognised qualification alongside their final years of professional performance.
