Sydney Dance Company’s Somos Set to Enchant Melbourne and Sydney in 2025

Sydney Dance Company’s 2025 season kicks off with the highly anticipated Melbourne premiere of Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela’s critically acclaimed work, Somos. Following its sold-out world premiere in Sydney in late 2023, this evocative and sensual production will grace the Arts Centre Melbourne from 13 to 23 March, before returning to Sydney Dance Company’s Neilson Studio for an encore season from 27 March to 6 April.

Translated as “we are” in Spanish, Somos is a deeply personal work for Bonachela, marking the first time he has drawn inspiration from his Spanish heritage. The piece is a celebration of passion, vulnerability, and beauty, weaving together evocative solos, intimate duets, and trios that explore the compelling dynamics between dancers. Infused with a distinctly Spanish essence, Somos is a tender yet powerful exploration of identity and connection.

Bonachela’s creative vision was profoundly influenced by the cinematic artistry of Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, particularly his use of Latin music and his portrayal of strong female characters. This inspiration is reflected in Somos’s soundtrack, which features iconic Hispanic women artists, adding another layer of cultural richness to the performance.

Originally devised for the intimate Neilson Studio, Somos is performed in the round, breaking down traditional barriers between audience and performers. This unique staging allows viewers to experience the dancers’ artistry and physicality up close, creating an immersive and emotionally charged atmosphere.

The 2025 season will see Somos enriched with new music and choreographic elements, ensuring a fresh experience for returning audiences. The Melbourne premiere will also mark a significant milestone for Sydney Dance Company, as new dancers Mathilda Ballantyne, Mali Comlekci, Sonrisa Hubbard, Eka Perunicic, and Sam Winkler join the ensemble for the first time.

In Sydney, the Neilson Studio’s foyer will once again transform into Bar Boca, a vibrant tapas bar offering pre- and post-show dining and drinks, enhancing the Spanish-inspired experience.

Don’t miss your chance to witness this magnetic and deeply moving work. Tickets for both Melbourne and Sydney seasons are expected to sell quickly, so secure yours early to avoid disappointment.
