Sydney Dance Company's Pre-Professional Year offers nationally recognised qualifications, delivering CUA51520 Diploma of Professional Dance (Elite Performance). All graduating first-year dancers can progress to the second year of training to complete CUA60120 Advanced Diploma of Professional Dance (Elite Performance). Successful applicants who have already completed diploma-level tertiary education or higher complete CUA60120 Advanced Diploma of Professional Dance (Elite Performance). Sydney Dance Company is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO #45863).
Description
Sydney Dance Company's Pre-Professional Year encompasses the full scope of professional dance. From life in a fulltime dance company to an independent freelance artist and choreographic researcher, the Pre-Professional Year course will empower all aspiring professional dancers to find their individual career path.
Main Subjects
Contemporary dance techniques, classical ballet and biomechanical techniques, improvisation and composition, partnering and contact improvisation, Sydney Dance Company repertoire, choreographic developments and movement workshops with over 35 nationally and internationally renowned industry teachers per year, professional career development including audition techniques, performance skills and advanced conditioning skills; yoga, Pilates, embodied anatomy, nutrition, resilience and self-care, mindful movement and injury prevention.
Practical Classes
Ten technical sessions per week
Five 3-hour guest workshops per week
Contact Hours
32.5 hours per week.
Pre-Requisites
Applicants need to be at least 18 years of age in 2024 and demonstrate competency in classical and contemporary dance technique. Eagerness to explore collaborative processes and choreographic developments is encouraged. Applications are open to Australian and New Zealand residents.
Teachers
Sydney Dance Company's Head of Training Linda Gamblin, Pre-Professional Year Course Coordinator Tobiah Booth-Remmers, Training Associate Juliette Barton, Learning Associate Alexandria Panetta, Sydney Dance Company's Rehearsal Director Richard Cilli and Rehearsal Associate Charmene Yap along with Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela and Company dancers when in residence. Pre-Professional Year students train as an ensemble and work with over 35 guest choreographers, teachers and company affiliates each year.
Auditions Date
Applications close Monday 4th September 2023. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to audition on Monday 25 September 2023 at Sydney Dance Company studios, Wharf 4/5, 15 Hickson Road DAWES POINT NSW 2000. A minimal application fee of $65 is required. You will be required to include three videos of up to 2 minutes each: one Classical, one contemporary and one improvisation.

Audition Requirements
Shortlisted applicants are to make their own way to Sydney to attend their Audition Workshop on Monday 25 September 2023. If you are unable to attend there is an option to submit a Video Only Audition. This requires contacting fulltime@sydneydancecompany.com for further information.

Scholarship or Subsidies
Sydney Dance Company offers a limited number of scholarships made available thanks to generous support provided by private donors. Dancers who have been accepted into the program and who are unable to meet the course fee requirements are encouraged to apply. Scholarship applications are assessed by Sydney Dance Company's review panel on a case-by-case basis. Successful scholarship applicants will be contacted by the end of 2023.
