Cancelled: Lady of the Camellias

In Singapore for the very first time, John Neumeier’s internationally acclaimed Lady of the Camellias is the ballet event of the year.

Featuring some of the most beautiful pas de deux in 20th-century ballet set to the romantic piano music of Frederic Chopin, John Neumeier’s most beloved work is a poignant tale of true love and loss. Based on Alexandre Dumas fils’ landmark novel La Dame aux Camélias, Lady of the Camellias is an unconventional story ballet that tells the tragic tale of Marguerite, a beautiful courtesan secretly suffering from tuberculosis, whose life of debauchery takes a turn when she falls in love with Armand Duval, a young man from a well-to-do family. Confronted by Armand’s father, she decides to leave her one true love, and soon after dies of her illness.

Since its premiere in 1978, Lady of the Camellias has entered the repertory of ballet companies such as Stuttgart Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, and the American Ballet Theatre. This debut presentation in Singapore will be directed by Neumeier himself, as Artistic Director and Chief Choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet.
