Award-winning choreographer Kate Champion is not afraid to tackle contentious issues when she creates work for her company, Force Majeure. Never Did Me Any Harm, which is a first-time collaboration between Force Majeure and Sydney Theatre Company, is no exception. Inspired by Chris Tsiolkas's much-discussed novel, The Slap, Champion takes on the sensitive topic of parenting.
As the buzz around The Slap indicates, child-raising is a hot topic in contemporary Australian society. In making Never Did Me Any Harm, Champion and her company interviewed people of all ages and backgrounds about their views on parenting. These interviews formed the basis for the work, which is presented as a series of vignettes set in an Australian backyard. These short scenes ask big questions about what it means to be a parent in today’s Australia.
Dance Australia has two double passes to give away for Never Did Me Any Harm, which will be presented in Melbourne as part of the Melbourne Festival. Tickets are for Wednesday 10 October, at MTC Sumner Theatre, Southbank.
