West Australian Ballet is getting ready to present a Balanchine bill this May. Entitled “Embraceable You: A Celebration of Balanchine”, the program includes Who Cares?, Concerto Barocco and Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux.
Who Cares? is set to the music of George and Ira Gershwin, featuring 17 of their greatest hits, including “It’s Wonderful”, “Who Cares” “I Got Rhythm”, “Lady be Good" and “Embraceable You”.
Danced to Bach’s Concerto in D for Two Violins, Concerto Barcocco was part of the New York City Ballet’s 1948 premiere season and remains a signature work of the company.
Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux is renowned for its technicality and was created when a long-lost piece of music from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake was rediscovered.
The evening will also include principal dancer Jayne Smeulders’s Tarantella, a work inspired by Balanchine.
“Embraceable You: A Celebration of Balanchine" plays His Majesty’s Theatre, Perth, 15 – 30 May. For more info head to www.waballet.com.au
