West Australian Ballet presented its 2015 program last night at His Majesty’s Theatre, Perth.

As always, the year will kick off with the “Ballet at the Quarry” season.  Held annually at the Quarry Amphitheatre as part of the Perth International Arts Festival, the 2015 bill includes Zip Zap Zoom and La Pluie (The Rain) by Belgian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, William Forsythe’s Steptext and a new work by WAB’s Daniel Roberts entitled Hold the Forth.

Next on the WAB menu is mixed bill "Embraceable You: a Celebration of Balanchine”.  The program includes Who Cares, Concerto Barocco and Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, as well as a new work by WAB principal dancer Jayne Smeulders.  Entitled Tarantella, Smeulders has taken inspiration from Balanchine to create this short piece.

Another regular feature, the "Genesis" season is next.  This program features works created by the company’s dancers.

Following on from 2014’s La Fille Mal Gardee, 2015 sees a second co-production with Queensland Ballet.  WAB will present Greg Horsman’s Coppelia, which sees the much-loved ballet set in late-19th century South Australia, in the German settlement of Hahndorf.

Wrapping up the year is Cinderella.  This version, by WAB's Smeulders, made its debut in 2011.  With its sparkle and humour, it’s not surprising that the company has chosen to remount this production of the famous fairytale.
