Jon Green is well known amongst the WA dance community for his beautiful photography, in particular his work with West Australian Ballet and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. With over 25 years experience, Green has spent the last 15 years working as a freelance performing arts photographer, documenting the arts activity and performances of many of Perth’s dance and theatre companies, for archival and promotional purposes. While Green has enjoyed critical and popular acclaim for this work, it has left him with little time to pursue his own creative work as a photographer… until now.
Green is currently undertaking a residency, entitled "no standing! development of movement in space" at Spectrum Project Space, Edith Cowan University, exploring the interaction between movement, photographer and audience as a live performance work/exhibition in a gallery setting. "For this part of the residency, I extended an invitation to WAAPA's talented acting, dance and music students to participate,” elaborates Green. “The response has been fantastic. It is my intention to display the images from this development period on the walls of the gallery as they are created and printed, forming an exhibition in it’s own right."
Green wants to re-consider the gallery space as a performance space, scrutinizing the process of the “photo shoot” and exposing the worlds behind the captured, hung images on the wall. "The borders of live performance and exhibition, the interaction and choreography of the dancer and camera, have continued to excite me working with dancers since 2000. Now that I have the creative desire and expert knowledge with digital technology, and more time, I am able to work with dancers who can facilitate my vision and push the ideas further.”
Green’s residency began on 12 January and continues until 14 February. The exhibition launch will take place alongside the launch of Green’s book of photography, entitled Journey into Silence, at 3pm on Sunday 16 February. The exhibition will run until 21 February and Green will give a talk at 2pm, Friday 21 February.
