In 2026, The Royal Ballet School will mark its centenary with a year-long celebration honouring its remarkable contribution to dance and education. Founded in 1926 by Dame Ninette de Valois, the School began as the Academy of Choreographic Art, born from her vision for an English repertory ballet company and training institution to rival those of Europe and Russia.

A century later, that vision continues to flourish. The Royal Ballet School stands as one of the world’s most respected centres for classical ballet training, blending tradition with innovation and a growing commitment to inclusivity. Artistic Director Iain Mackay described the milestone as “a momentous moment for the School as a world leader in the education, training and holistic development of talented dancers.”

Throughout 2026, audiences will be invited to take a closer look behind the curtain, with events exploring the School’s history, artistry and community impact. Highlights include a series of public panels, a three-part exhibition at the Royal Opera House featuring archival costumes and photographs, and the return of the Let’s Dance open day and Associate insight events around the UK. The celebrations will culminate in the annual Summer Performances, with a special centenary season curated by Mackay featuring Sir Peter Wright’s Swan Lake Act III and works by Cathy Marston, Christopher Wheeldon, David Bintley, Jessica Lang, Andrew McNicol, Kristen McNally and Dame Ninette de Valois herself.

The Royal Ballet School’s centenary also carries particular resonance for Australia, where its influence has long been felt. Many Australians have trained or held leadership roles at the School and within The Royal Ballet. Among its notable graduates and figures are Leanne Benjamin, former Principal of The Royal Ballet; Gailene Stock, who led The Royal Ballet School as Director; and Lucette Aldous, one of Australia’s most celebrated ballerinas and a distinguished alumna.

To commemorate the year, the School has also released a limited-edition 2026 Centenary Wall Calendar featuring photography by Robbie Lawrence and key milestones from across its hundred-year story.

As the Royal Ballet School steps into its second century, its founding purpose remains unchanged: to nurture exceptional young artists and ensure that, for generations to come, this is where it starts.
