Broome is about to experience a contemporary dance performance that traverses two generations. Entitled Because of You, the work is based around 12 child-parent duos.  It’s presented as part of Future Landings, a unique initiative designed to bring contemporary dance experiences to regional communities.

Because of You, directed by Broome-based choreographer Sandi Woo, is a “day-in-the-life” style exploration of domestic reality for families.  Eight mother/child pairs and four father/child pairs bring the parent-child relationship to the stage. “Family life is a fine balance between cuddles and negotiation, chaos and calm,” remarks Woo. “I have wanted to explore these domestic dynamics artistically because I find that when we dance and play we can transform how we see the everyday. Together, we have explored the range of emotions and energies that exist inside each parent-child relationship – a relationship between two people who know each other extremely well. Sitting next to each other. Sitting on each other! Embracing. When these two bodies move and dance together – glorious! Their innate trust in each other translates into performance that is candid, beautiful and full of joy.”

Woo has been mentored by award winning Perth-based choreographer and director Felicity Bott, who has travelled to Broome many times to work with Woo and her team of parent-child duos. Because of You is the first of several works which will be performed under the Future Landings banner in 2013.  Point Samson, Karratha and Jerdacuttup will host Future Landings performances later this year.
