The Australian Ballet will present the Australian premiere of Copland Dance Episodes, a contemporary work by Justin Peck, marking the first time the ballet has been staged outside of New York City Ballet.
Set to music by Aaron Copland, the work unfolds across 22 episodes for a cast of 30 dancers, drawing on four of Copland’s scores. Created in 2023, Copland Dance Episodes has been described as a fast-moving, ensemble-driven piece, combining athleticism with a clear, rhythmic structure that places equal emphasis on group dynamics and individual precision.
The production will premiere at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre from 23 June to 2 July, accompanied by Orchestra Victoria, before travelling to the Sydney Opera House for a season in the Joan Sutherland Theatre from 6 to 21 November, with Opera Australia Orchestra.
Artistic Director David Hallberg framed the acquisition as both an artistic and institutional milestone. “Justin Peck has a rare ability to create work that feels electrifying and alive… It pushes our dancers in exciting ways, which always gives the audience a true sense of surprise through movement.” He added that presenting the work in Australia reflects the company’s standing on the international stage.
Peck, currently Resident Choreographer at New York City Ballet, has built a cross-disciplinary career spanning ballet, Broadway and film, including choreography for West Side Story and Maestro. His earlier work Everywhere We Go was presented by The Australian Ballet in 2022, establishing a relationship that continues with this new staging.
Visually, the production brings together a distinct creative team, with set design by Jeffrey Gibson, costumes by Ellen Warren and lighting by Brandon Stirling Baker.
The Melbourne season will also mark the company’s final performances at the Regent Theatre before its return to the Ian Potter State Theatre, adding an additional layer of transition to the premiere run.
Tickets are now on sale.
