The Australian Ballet has announced its 2015 season today.  Launched as “A Year of Beauty”, the program’s highlight is a new production of The Sleeping Beauty, directed by AB artistic director, David McAllister.  The new work will premiere in Melbourne before touring to Perth and Sydney.

As well as The Sleeping Beauty, the company will present a selection of contemporary and classical works.  Mixed bill “20:21” includes a world premiere from resident choreographer Tim Harbour, George Balanchine’s Symphony in Three Movements and In the Upper Room by Twyla Tharp.  “20:21” will play in Melbourne and Sydney.

Maina Gielgud’s 1986 production of Giselle, first staged when she was artistic director of AB, will be presented in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

Triple Bill “The Dream” celebrates the work of Frederick Ashton.  Not surprisingly, it features Ashton’s The Dream, his whimsical take on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as two of his short works, Monotones II and Symphonic Variations.  “The Dream” will play Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Alexei Ratmansky’s Cinderella will return to the stage in Melbourne in response to popular demand.  Graeme Murphy’s Swan Lake also returns – it will be presented in Sydney.

The annual “Bodytorque” program takes a different format this year, with a series of surprise “pop-up” performance to be presented after selected shows of “The Dream” and “20:21” in Melbourne and Sydney.  Bodytorque gives young and emerging choreographers a chance to flex their creative muscles.

Lastly, the company’s traditional, free Telstra Outdoor performance will return to Brisbane with Telsta Ballet in the Gardens.
