Audiences in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney will have a chance to catch Scottish dance company Curious Seed this June. Curious Seed will be performing Chalk About, a contemporary dance work that encourages young audiences to contemplate their own identity through dance.

Chalk About was created by Curious Seed founder, Christine Devaney, and Leandro Kees. Devaney and Kees’s creative relationship began at Fresh Tracks Europe, a workshop series for young choreographers, in 2011. Paired together as part of the workshop program, the two choreographers began to explore the nature of identity through a series of questions, such as “What makes us who we are? Is it where we are from? Or how we talk? Is it the way we dance? Our pasts or our futures?”

Devaney and Kees asked these questions of young people from Utrecht, Dusseldorf and Edinburgh. The responses became an integral part of Chalk About, with the voices of responders featuring in the sound track. Together, they developed Chalk About into a full-length show for young audiences, which premiered at the Imaginate Festival in Edinburgh in 2013.

Chalk About plays the Adelaide Festival Centre as part of the Come Out Chidlren’s Festival on 30 May; Arts Centre Melbourne 6-7 June and the Sydney Opera House 13-14 June
