Over two evenings, Sydney Dance Company (SDC) will tackle the tango, as part of Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s “Le Grand Tango” concert.  A two-part concert, “Le Grand Tango” begins with music from Bizet, Pablo Sarasate and Alberto Ginastero.  The second part will be a trip of compositions by Piazolla, a composer renowned as the creator of Nuevo Tango.  By using elements of jazz and classical music, Piazolla created a new type of Tango.

It’s the Piazolla section of the program that involves SDC.  The company has commissioned Cass Mortimer Eipper and Lucas Jervies to choreograph their own interpretations of the tango.  These have been created to the first two Piazolla compositions, Le Grand Tango and The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.  The works will be performed by SDC associate dancers Tara Gower, Olympia Kotopoulus, Zachary Lopez, Luke Mangraviti, Daniel Russell and Laura Wood.

SDC artistic director Rafael Bonachela has choreographed the final work of the program, a contemporary interpretation of Piazolla’s Libertango.  The duet will be performed byJanessa Dufty and Petros Treklis.

"Le Grand Tango" will be performed at the Sydney Opera House, April 17 and 18. For more info, including bookings, head to www.sydneysymphony.com
