Sydney Dance Company’s new triple bill, Engine, will open at The Art House Wyong on Friday 19 June, giving Central Coast audiences the first opportunity to see the production before its Sydney Opera House season.
Presented by The Art House, the program brings together three works by three choreographers: Melanie Lane’s Love Lock, Fran Diaz’s The Mass Ornament and Rafael Bonachela’s The Journey Itself is Home.
The Wyong performance continues The Art House’s ongoing relationship with Sydney Dance Company, which has brought the company to the Central Coast as part of the venue’s broader commitment to presenting major performing arts companies outside metropolitan centres.
Engine offers a varied entry point into Sydney Dance Company’s current repertory, moving across distinct visual and choreographic worlds in a single evening.
Lane’s Love Lock features costumes by Akira Isogawa and electronic music by Clark. The work imagines a fantastical folk dance of the future, drawing on love stories as its point of departure.
Diaz’s The Mass Ornament, set to music by Henryk Górecki, will receive its first Australian performances as part of Engine. The work explores mass movement, intricate physical connection and synchronised patterning across the ensemble.
Bonachela’s The Journey Itself is Home closes the program, with music by Grammy Award-winning composer Bryce Dessner. The work takes inspiration from the 17th-century Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō.
The Art House is positioning the program as both a drawcard for existing dance audiences and an accessible introduction for those newer to contemporary dance, with the triple bill offering a cross-section of design, music and movement styles in one program.
Following the performance, audience members will be invited to stay for complimentary refreshments in the foyer and a chance to meet the dancers.
Sydney Dance Company’s Engine will be performed at The Art House Wyong on Friday 19 June at 8pm. Tickets are on sale now, with adult, concession, Encore Member and under 30 pricing available.
