West Australian Ballet’s Christmas production is Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, by Hungarian choreographer Gyula Harangozó. Created in 2004 for the Hungarian State Opera, this is the work’s Australian premiere and will be presented at His Majesty's Theatre, Perth.
Snow White is beloved by all except the evil Queen (her stepmother). When the Queen’s magic mirror tells her that Snow White has surpassed her in beauty, she orders her huntsman to take Snow White’s life in a fit of jealousy. Taking pity on the innocent girl, however the huntsman allows her to escape. Separated from her home and her Prince, Snow White finds shelter and friendship with seven spirited dwarfs.
When the Queen discovers the deception, she hatches an evil plan to be rid of Snow White once and for all. Eating from a poisoned apple, Snow White collapses and is discovered by her distraught friends. It is the dedication of her dwarf friends, and the magic of true love’s kiss, that help this Princess find her happy ending.
Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs will be performed by West Australian Ballet, together with the West Australian Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Wolfgang Heinz.
