In NSW dance teachers, dance school owners, dance judges and officials came together in Sydney on 17 January to learn how to make dance environments safer for children. In partnership with Ballet Australasia Limited and the National Dance Association, the Office of Children’s Guardian delivered the seminar on Child Safe Organisation training. The seminar took place as part of Ballet Australasia Limited’s Summer School.
The training outlined systems, practice and tools which help to make organisations more child safe and child friendly. Topics covered included risk-management strategies, the new Working With Children Check obligations, recruitment tips, legal responsibilities, social media advice, appropriate behaviours and complaint handling procedures.
The NSW Children’s Guardian, Kerryn Boland says it is encouraging that national dance organisations were keen to be involved with the Child Safe Organisations community education and training program. “The dance sector should be commended for the efforts they are taking to increase their understanding of child protection in their particular workplaces,” she commented.
