A film of the Paris Opera Ballet performing Romeo and Juliet is the next in the series of films of live ballet performances to be screened in Australian cinemas.
This version of the ballet is new to Australians, having been choreographed by the German choreographer, Sasha Waltz. Some may remember Waltz from the 2009 Melbourne Festival, when she brought her own company to perform her Medea and Korper, which were admired by critics and audiences alike.
Waltz’s is a dramatic and stylish version, choreographed to Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Dramatique, complete with opera chorus. Three solo singers and the chorus share the stage with the dancers. The doomed lovers are performed by Paris Opera Ballet etoiles Aurelie Dupont and Herve Moreau and the production is filmed in 3D at the Palais Garnier in Paris, allowing viewers to get in close.
This is an opportunity to see the renown Paris Opera Ballet as well as the Opera in one fascinating performance.
