It has been five years since Australian Dance Theatre has presented a full-length program in Sydney. But now at last the talented ensemble is returning, with Be Your Self, choreographed by artistic director Garry Stewart.
Featuring the full complement of dancers along with guest actor Annabel Giles, Be Your Self integrates contemporary dance, music, spoken word, video and architectural design into an “extraordinary, immersive experience”. “Exploring the body and mind, from the biological to the psychological, this highly physical piece showcases the body as a force to be reckoned with”, according to the company's press release.
“Of his newest creation, Stewart, who has recently been recognised in a publication by Routledge UK as one of the world’s top fifty contemporary choreographers, says, “The narrative of our ‘self’ isn't linear and seamless, but is composed of a complex array of stops, starts, rewinds, fast-forwards, eliminations and embellishments. In order to make this work I had to hybridize various discourses from neuro-anatomy, physiology, western philosophy and buddhism. As a result Be Your Self became an important turning point in my trajectory as a dance maker.”
‘Be Your Self’ will run for five performances at the Sydney Theatre from May 31 to June 3,
