Internationally acclaimed artist and director Lloyd Newson OBE will visit Newcastle in NSW for a special evening even November 26, the city’s first significant cultural event since the most recent COVID-19 lockdown.

Australian-born Newson, a world-renowned director of theatre, dance, and film, is the founder of the award-winning London-based DV8 Physical Theatre. For the event, Newson will present a keynote speech about his international career before sitting down for a rigorous conversation with Kate Champion. Champion is one of Australia’s leading directors/choreographers, and is the founder of Sydney-based dance theatre company, Force Majeure.

The two will discuss Newson’s creative drive and the lessons he has learnt during his 40-year career in the arts. It is the first time that the two formidable artists have spoken together in public.

The event is funded by the City of Newcastle’s Special Business Rate Program and is part of the Creative Newcastle project, which is led by Hunter Creative Alliance. Cadi McCarthy, the director of Newcastle’s Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub is a member of Hunter Creative Alliance. She says it is a coup for Newcastle to have Newson appearing.

“It feels special because of the profound impact of the recent lockdown on artists and the wider community. We hope the event inspires people to return to events as well as encouraging artists to continue their work.”

Newson has been cited as one of ‘the 100 most influential artists in Britain during the past century’ by the UK's Critics Circle. Event host Kate Champion noted his enduring effect on theatre and dance on a global scale. “His unrelenting rigour, astute perception and fearless political opinions have made so much of his work original, deeply affecting and unforgettable. It will be a very special opportunity for Newcastle audiences and artists alike.”
