After months of anticipation, Queensland Ballet has lifted the curtain on its 2025 Triple Bill, a captivating program featuring Gemini, 4Seasons, and A Rhapsody in Motion. These three distinct works by acclaimed Australian choreographers Natalie Weir, Jack Lister, and Greg Horsman are set to electrify Brisbane audiences from 27 June to 5 July 2025 at the Playhouse, QPAC.
What makes this Triple Bill particularly special is the rare opportunity to experience live music, with Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra – accompanying the 37 dancers. Queensland Ballet Artistic Director, Ivan Gil-Ortega, emphasises the profound connection between music and movement. “From Vivaldi to Rachmaninoff to a bold new composition inspired by Dvořák, music is the heartbeat of any dance work, in my opinion,” he states. “To honour these works fully, a live orchestra is essential. Camerata’s musicians bring a vibrancy and immediacy that elevates the entire experience for our audience.”
This season is a true celebration of Australian creativity, presenting a world premiere alongside two audience favourites reimagined for the mainstage.
Jack Lister’s world premiere, Gemini, promises an atmospheric journey into a subterranean world. Underpinned by an original score from Louis Frere-Harvey, inspired by Dvořák’s New World Symphony, Lister's cinematic storytelling explores the tension between isolation and collectivity. Expect a large ensemble performance within a beautifully crafted landscape of movement, light, and sound.
Natalie Weir’s 4Seasons offers a poignant exploration of love and human connection, using nature’s cycle as a powerful metaphor. Set to the sublime music of Vivaldi and Max Richter, the work showcases Weir’s emotive, lyrical choreography and her deep sensitivity to the human experience.
Finally, Greg Horsman’s A Rhapsody in Motion is a heartfelt homage to the life of the dancer. Set to Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, this work celebrates the discipline of the ballet barre, the artistry and technique, and the emotional freedom found in performance, highlighting the unspoken dialogue between artist and audience.
Whether you're a seasoned ballet lover or new to the art form, the Triple Bill offers something for everyone. It’s an ideal introduction for newcomers, presenting three unique worlds in one evening, ranging from contemporary to classical, intimate to grand. For long-time enthusiasts, it's a chance to witness the exceptional talent of Queensland Ballet artists, elevated by the fantastic live orchestral accompaniment by Camerata.
