Choreographer Aimee Smith and sound designer Ben Taaffe are long-time collaborators.  In October the pair will present their first co-directed work, Borderline, at the State Theatre Centre of WA.

Borderline explores the proposition that our modern world exists in a state of borderline insanity.  “Many of us, at times, have wondered to ourselves if the strange and complex world in which we live has actually gone crazy – or, alternatively, if it is ourselves that have lost touch with ‘reality’,” says Smith.  “Borderline grew out of a desire to question where the madness lies. It reflects an exaggerated experience of such questioning and confusion to explore our shared experiences of normality and insanity as we move towards an uncertain and perilous future.”

Borderline’s cast is made up of eight local dancers, all Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) graduates.   “The Western Australian contemporary dance scene is really vibrant at the moment and going through some exciting transformations,” remarks Smith. “There is so much talent here and its great to see WAAPA graduates staying and investing in their careers here. I’m so proud and privileged to be working with such talent.”

Smith has been recently announced as a shortlisted nominee for the 2014 Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Independent Dance, for her 2012 work Wintering.  Taaffe’s design for this work won a West Australian Dance Award in 2013.
