POINTE offers an intimate and unflinching portrait of acclaimed dancer and choreographer Floeur Alder, daughter of ballet greats Lucette Aldous and Alan Alder, as she confronts trauma, family legacy and the redemptive power of art.
At just 22, on the cusp of an international career, Alder was the victim of a random, near-fatal knife attack outside her Perth home. Though her physical injuries healed, the psychological scars ran deep, stirring painful memories and forcing her to reckon with her past, her future and the shadows of her renowned parents.
Directed with sensitivity by Dawn Jackson in her feature debut, the film follows Alder’s recovery from PTSD and her return to dance, not only as a means of reclaiming her body but of rediscovering her identity. From choreographing Rare Earth alongside her parents to creating a raw new work in France inspired by Carmen, Alder channels movement to process grief, rage and hope.
In a defining moment, she steps back onto the stage at His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth, performing the piece born from her trauma and receiving a standing ovation. “The healing was not only about my incident. It was about my childhood, my parents, my whole life,” Alder reflects.
Rich with rare archival footage and appearances from iconic figures including Chrissie Parrott, David McAllister, Dame Monica Mason, Dame Gillian Lynne, Dame Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, the film honours the global ballet community that helped lift Alder in her darkest moments.
POINTE is a poetic exploration of resilience, identity and the transformative power of creative expression. Supported by Screenwest, Lotterywest and Screen Australia, alongside philanthropic and cultural fund contributions, the documentary premiered at CinefestOZ in August and has already left a lasting impression on audiences.
