The name of WA’s new state flagship contemporary dance company has been revealed as (drum roll please)… Co3. The company’s launch will take place today (Friday 29 May) at the Celebrate WA gala. Co3 dancers will perform to Perh band Birds of Tokyo’s “Lanterns”.

The name represents the company’s roles. “3” refers to the three arms of the company – a professional dance ensemble, a youth ensemble and education programs. The “Co” is short for “company”. Artistic director Raewyn Hill explains that the company is also motivated by three principles. “Driven by excellence and collaboration, Co3 is a contemporary organisation, generating contemporary conversations through dance,” she says. “The heart of our artistic program is delivered under the three principles, curate, commission and create. We deliver expert work across three areas; our main stage performances, our youth ensemble, and our education unit.”

The professional dance ensemble arm of the company will perform a range of newly curated, commissioned and created works. Its youth program will offer intensive workshops for its youth and junior ensemble members as well as weekly classes in ballet and contemporary dance. The education programs will include a variety of dance programs within the education sector, as well as holiday courses.
