Chunky Move’s annual “Next Move” season will be presented at the Chunky Move Studios in Southbank, Melbourne, Thursday 8 – Saturday 17 September. "Next Move" exists to commission new work, and support and nurture the next generation of leading dance makers. This year’s program features REMAKE by Melanie Lane and Mermermer by Jo Lloyd and Nicola Gunn.

REMAKE sees Lane, together with ex-soloist of the Australian Ballet Juliet Burnett, draw on the physical archive embedded in a classical dancer, and its displacement within a contemporary setting. Through narrative, space and technology, REMAKE employs the classical as the catalyst for the contemporary – a body negotiating between tradition and future, a solo in dialogue with an ‘other’. "REMAKE is titled as a reference to the subject of the piece as well as a nod towards my departure from some directions of my previous work,” says Lane. “The idea offers a platform for dissecting these representations and transforming them into a performance that speaks about human existence."

Jo Lloyd and Nicola Gunn’s Mermermer explores empathy, extinction and the uncovering of our current cultural dance. Created and performed by Lloyd and Gunn, the work sees both performers maintain physical and verbal conversations simultaneously throughout the entirety of the work. The starting point for this duet stems from Conversation Therapy, a practice Lloyd and Gunn developed during preparation for their interactive performance at the National Gallery of Victoria as part of Melbourne NOW. “Nicola and I share an interest in creating works that examine human behaviour and provoke dialogue about social concerns,” says Lloyd. “Choreographically, I am driven by the idea of dance as ‘watching the thinking' and the questions, What resides in the body, its history, and confusion? What can this performance do?”
