Carriageworks (Sydney) has announced its 2014 program and there are some exciting dance events, including two new initiatives, in the mix.

Amongst these is a new partnership with Sydney Dance Company (SDC).  Entitled "New Breed", the program will see four new works by emerging choreographers performed at Carriageworks 5-8 November.  The artists will be selected by SDC’s artistic director Rafael Bonachela and will give those choreographers the opportunity to work with the dancers of SDC.

The other new event happening at Carriageworks in 2014 is the Keir choreographic award, which will be presented in July.  This new, biennial award is dedicated to the commissioning of new work and promoting innovation in contemporary dance.   The Keir Choreographic Award is a collaboration between the Keir Foundation, Dancehouse and Carriageworks.  More information about this new award can be found on Artshub.

In May Carriageworks will again host Lemi Ponifasio and his dance company Mau, presenting the Australian premiere of Stones in her Mouth.  A ten-member ensemble of Maori woman will articulate a powerful and determined challenge - voiced through the Maori language, genealogy, spirituality and ceremony and drawing on the Maori tradition of poetry and chant. Mau’s ensemble gives expression to resilience and outrage in the face of social and political change.

French contemporary dance company, Compagnie Didier Theron will perform Shanghai Bolero Triptych at Carriageworks in September.  Exploring repetition and duration with intense precision, the company addresses notions of sensuality and eroticism. This raw, dramatic and confronting dance work is built around the orchestral classic, Ravel’s Bolero.

Co-commissioned by Carriageworks and Force Majeure, Byron Perry will present Obscura, a new solo dance work, in October.  Obscura is presented within a large-scale camera obscura, bringing together natural light and lives streams of audio from the surrounding environment to create a unique and unfamiliar performance experience.
