NAISDA Dance College will celebrate its 40th anniversary at Carriageworks in Sydney with Circle of Cultures.

Circle of Cultures will being NAISDA’s story to life via three events; a photography exhibition, cultural dances from across Australia and a dance production entitled “Sand to Stage” directed by Frances Rings.

“Sand to Stage” pays homage to NAISDA’s past, present and future from 15-24 November. The first work on the triple bill is a recreation of Embassy, created by NAISDA founder Carole Y Johnson and one of NAISDA’s first public performances.

Bangarra senior dancer and NAISDA alumnae Elma Kris will also remount extracts from two works, Emeret Lu and About, both originally created for Bangarra Dance Theatre. Both works celebrate Torres Strait Islander culture.

Looking to the future, NAISDA’s current diploma developing artists will choreograph the third and final piece in collaboration with and mentored by Frances Rings.

Prior to each “Sand to Stage” performances, audiences will be able to enjoy a free performance by NAISDA’s cultural tutors. This will see communities from Mornington Island, Saibai Island, Moa Island, Yirrkala and Elcho Island present their cultural dance.

Finally a photography and multimedia exhibition, Naya Wa Yugali (We Dance), will be held from 15 November to 11 December.
