Misty Copeland is no stranger to Dance Australia readers and, no doubt, many of you are avid fans. So if you’re living in Melbourne, Sydney or Canberra, you will be thrilled to know that A Ballerina’s Tale, a documentary about Copeland’s incredible journey to ballet stardom, will be playing in Palace cinemas as part of American documentary film festival hotDocs this June and July. A Ballerina’s Tale tells Copeland’s story; the struggle of an African-American dancer who fought against the prejudices of the dance world in America to become a prima ballerina with American Ballet Theatre. Considered a prodigy at an early age, despite not starting ballet until she was 13, Copeland has now become a role model and source of inspiration for thousands of young dancers and has an active career, not only as dancer but as an author and entertainer. You can check out a preview of the film on our homepage.

Also screening as part of the festival is Mr Gaga, a documentary about Ohad Naharin, artistic director of Israel’s world-renowned Batsheva Dance Company. Mr Gaga, the opening night film in Melbourne and Canberra, takes us into the world of Naharin, a choreographer whose performances have redefined the language of dance. It’s a look at his universe, created through archival footage, intimate rehearsal scenes and extensive dance sequences.
