For over three decades, Michela Kirkaldie has been a cornerstone of excellence at The Australian Ballet School (ABS), shaping the future of dance with her profound knowledge and unwavering dedication. As she retires after an extraordinary 33 years, the ballet community reflects on her immense contribution, particularly her specialised work in biomechanics, technique, and teacher training.
After training with some of Australia's ballet pioneers, including Edouard Borovansky, Laurel Martyn, and Paul Hammond, Michela Kirkaldie realised her childhood dream by joining The Australian Ballet. Her talent quickly saw her ascend to the rank of principal artist, where she famously danced the coveted dual role of Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, a dream realised after a dramatic mid-performance cast change. Her illustrious performing career also took her to London, where she graced the stage with the London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet), further honing her artistry before returning to inspire the next generation of dancers in her home country.
Since joining the school in 1991, Michela has been instrumental in preparing countless young dancers for professional careers and, significantly, training the next generation of ballet teachers. Her unique approach, deeply rooted in the biomechanics of movement, has provided students with a precise understanding of their bodies and how to achieve optimal technique. As she herself once sought deeper understanding beyond simple directions, Michela has empowered her students to become self-directed, analytical, and resilient artists.
The impact of Michela's work is evident in the heartfelt tributes from her former colleagues and students across social media. Marilyn Rowe AM OBE, former Principal Dancer and Former Director of The Australian Ballet School, shared: "A beautiful ballerina, a wonderful teacher and highly regarded colleague. Thank you, Micky, for the 16 years you gave the School during my directorship. With respect, admiration and love."
Stephanie Petersen (Williams), a former student, expressed profound gratitude: "Miss Kirkaldie. I’m forever grateful to have been a student of yours and to have learned so much from you! Thank you for your wisdom and dedication to the art form we both love."
Lisa Bolte, reminiscing on Michela's performance career, added: "Beautiful Michaela, You’re such an inspiration—both on and off the stage. I still vividly remember your breathtaking performance as Odette/Odile with Jonathon Kelly in 1985. Wishing you all the very best, always. With love, xo"
And Paul Knobloch simply stated: "A true gift to us all. Huge congratulations."
Michela's dedication to teaching extended to nurturing teachers themselves, imparting her diagnostic skills and methods of deconstructing and rebuilding technique. Her approach ensures that future educators can not only identify issues but also guide students to a deeper understanding of their own bodies and movement.
As Michela Kirkaldie embarks on a well-deserved retirement, she leaves behind an immeasurable legacy at The Australian Ballet School. Her passion, wisdom, and warmth have touched the lives of countless individuals, ensuring that the art of ballet continues to thrive for generations to come. We wish Michela a joyful and fulfilling new chapter.
