Mamma Mia! The Party, the immersive theatrical dining experience created by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus, will make its Australian debut at Sydney Event Centre at The Star in March 2027.
Combining live performance, a four-course Greek meal and an audience dance party, the production arrives following seasons in Stockholm and London. Tickets go on sale on Thursday 12 November, with a waitlist offering priority access ahead of general public sales.
The experience places audiences inside Nikos’ family-run taverna on the Greek island of Skopelos, where much of the 2008 Mamma Mia! film was shot. A romantic story unfolds around the dining tables, performed by a company of 20 musicians and performers, with ABBA songs including Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen and Waterloo.
After the performance, the venue becomes a 1970s-style disco, with a DJ playing ABBA favourites and guests invited onto the dance floor.
For dance audiences, the production offers a different setting for musical theatre choreography, with performers working throughout an environment shared with diners. The flagship London production is co-directed and choreographed by Stacey Haynes and Roine Söderlundh. Australian casting and local creative team details have yet to be announced.
The show features music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, with some songs co-written by Stig Anderson. Its story is by Calle Norlén, Roine Söderlundh and Ulvaeus, with an English book by writer and broadcaster Sandi Toksvig.
“From the very beginning, this experience was created to bring people together through music, storytelling and joy, and it has been wonderful to see audiences in Stockholm and London embrace it so wholeheartedly,” Ulvaeus said.
“Australia has always felt like a natural next step for us, and Sydney – with its energy, international appeal and love of live entertainment – is the perfect city for this next chapter.”
The Australian season is presented by Ulvaeus, Pophouse Entertainment and TEG Dainty. For promoter Paul Dainty, the project renews a connection dating back to ABBA’s 1977 Australian tour.
“I had the extraordinary privilege of promoting ABBA’s first and only Australian tour back in 1977, and I still remember the phenomenal excitement that followed them across the country,” Dainty said.
“To be now working with Björn and Pophouse to bring this extraordinary celebration of ABBA’s music to Sydney feels like a wonderful full-circle moment.”
Mamma Mia! The Party first opened in Stockholm in January 2016, followed by London in August 2019. According to the producers, the two productions have welcomed almost 1.5 million guests. The Sydney production is expected to create 151 year-round on-site roles.
The dining experience includes a welcome drink and a four-course meal featuring Greek sharing dishes, with vegetarian and vegan alternatives available. VIP packages and upgrades will also be offered.
