Making the transition from student to professional can be challenging, especially in the competitive world of dance. WA's LINK Dance Company (LDC), however, has been smoothing the way for graduate dancers for ten years. Dance Australia caught up with the company's Artistic Director, Michael Whaites to find out more about LDC's tenth anniversary performance, "Diversify".
Featuring works by Perth-based choreographers Jo Pollitt, Sue Peacock, Jacob Lehrer and Kim McCarthy, as well as Whaites, "Diversity" will be performed at the Fremantle Arts Centre. "I like to give the dancers alternative performance opportunities that are different from traditional proscenium arch environments when possible," says Whaites. "For this show there are over seventeen different performance sites ranging from a huge field to a landing on a stairway. Having this opportunity asks the dancers to consider proximity and performance styles. Being a meter away from your audience is very different than dancing on stage in front of a black void."
Whaites has chosen to present "Diversify" promenade-style. "The venue has so many fantastic spaces, so using many of them was the obvious choice," remarks Whaites. "The performance is immersive and give the audience an original experience."
LINK Dance Company, which is based at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), began its life as a research project conducted by WAAPA Head of Department Nanette Hassall and acclaimed WA choreographer Chrissie Parrott. "LINK was created to bridge the gap between being a student and professional practice." explains Whaites. "Dancers who have completed a three year tertiary dance course can apply for admission for the one year post graduate program. In addition to experiencing the 'simulated workplace', company members explore a research topic of their choice leading to a thesis. LINK dancers therefore gain both a transitional professional year and a further academic qualification."
