Sydney Dance Company is currently on an international tour which takes in New York, Barcelona and London. Dancers Annabel Knight and Todd Sutherland give us a glimpse of the fun.
What a buzz to be on our big international tour with Sydney Dance Company! We have just completed our one week season at the Joyce Theatre, New York City and what an amazing experience we all had. This was my second visit to NYC, but my first performing experience. It was undoubtedly a career highlight for me to be dancing in a city with so much passion and enthusiasm for the arts!
We had wonderful audiences… standing ovations every night were an added thrill. Despite an intense performing week we pulled though and were high on life and living the dream in New York City. Was an added bonus to have a day off afterwards to get some sightseeing in, and of course a spot of shopping in the Big Apple!
Next stop was Snape Maltings, Suffolk, England where we performed two shows to yet another enthusiastic crowd in an amazing venue in the English countryside. From the Joyce Theatre, NYC to a large converted barn in Suffolk….we have already experienced the wonders of international travel!
Next stop…. Barcelona then London!

As a dancer there is, perhaps, nothing more rewarding than being able to tour the world doing what you love. Added to this is the fact that those you travel with are not merely your colleagues but also your best friends. This tour sees us travelling to some of the most amazing destinations in the world – to cities that are rich in their cultural heritage and love of the performing arts.
First port of call: New York City! Perhaps best known for its host of musical theatre productions, New Yorkers are equally passionate about contemporary dance - this became evident as the standing ovations continued during our seven performances at the famous Joyce Theatre.
Work aside, New York became our playground…unseasonably warm winter weather permitted outdoor activities; the beautiful Central Park with its last remnants of autumn colour, the bustling shopping strip of Fifth Avenue, the chic cafes of the Meat Packing District, Broadway, and of course, sightings of the ultimate image of America - the Statue of Liberty. It wasn’t until we scaled to the huge height of the Rockefeller Centre’s observation deck, however, that we saw the true awesomeness of New York.
How lucky are we?
