Erin Clare, Nigel Huckle And Reuben Kaye To Lead Moulin Rouge! Sydney Return
The three leads join a company selected through more than 500 auditions, with Sonya Tayeh’s choreography returning to the Sydney Lyric in March 2027.
Erin Clare, Nigel Huckle and Reuben Kaye will lead the Australian company of Moulin Rouge! The Musical when the production returns to the Sydney Lyric in March 2027.
Clare will play Satine, opposite Huckle as Christian, with Kaye taking on nightclub impresario Harold Zidler. The announcement brings the company close to completion, following six weeks of open-call, in-person auditions that attracted more than 2,300 submissions. More than 500 performers auditioned for 34 roles.
Clare’s musical theatre credits include Beetlejuice, We Will Rock You and Heathers: The Musical. For the NSW-born performer, Satine offers a character whose public persona conceals a struggle for independence.
“She’s dazzling and powerful, but underneath the diamonds and glamour there’s this incredible vulnerability and a woman fighting for the freedom to choose her own life,” Clare said.
Sydney-born, Melbourne-based Huckle brings experience as Chris in Miss Saigon and Tony in West Side Story, alongside the international tour of Les Misérables and concert appearances with Lea Salonga.
“Christian is a role that I really resonate with because he’s an optimist like me,” Huckle said. “He arrives in Paris fully invested in these bohemian ideals of truth, beauty, freedom and love, and then suddenly finds himself living all of them.”
Kaye’s casting places an artist known for his cabaret performances and comedy at the centre of the Moulin Rouge nightclub. He said the role would offer audiences familiar with his work a different perspective.
“Zidler is an absolute gift of a role. He’s outrageous, cheeky, hilarious and completely in command of this extraordinary world, but underneath all of that spectacle there’s real heart and humanity,” Kaye said.
The three leads join previously announced principals Ben Hall as The Duke of Monroth, Tim Omaji as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Tyler Chapman as Santiago and Thalia Smith as Nini. Calista Nelmes will be the Satine Alternate.
For dance audiences, the return also brings another opportunity to see Sonya Tayeh’s Tony Award-winning choreography, performed by a newly assembled ensemble and swing team. Australian casting is by Lisa Campbell.
Director Alex Timbers said the selection process had sought performers capable of meeting the production’s demands across disciplines.
“From our principals through to our ensemble and swings, we have assembled a cast with incredible vocal, acting and dance ability, but also the charisma and fearlessness that Moulin Rouge! The Musical demands,” Timbers said.
Alongside Nelmes, the ensemble includes principal covers Joshua Russell and David Duketis, as well as John Rex Berry, Sarah Bourke, Bridgette Coach, Emma Feliciano, Louis Fontaine, Anthony Garcia, Alfie Gledhill, Sebastian Johnston, Adam Lyon, Sebaga Neumann, Bella Runnalls, Jordan Tomljenovic, Lucas Van Rhijn and Jennifer Wolfe.
The swings are Bayley Edmends, Brittany Ford, Sara Haruta, Lachlan Inwood, Jayden Prelc, Emma Russell, Callum Ryan and Nicole Vella. Casting for the Lady M’s is still to be announced.
Adapted from Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film, Moulin Rouge! The Musical won ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The production features a book by John Logan, with music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Justin Levine, drawing on more than 70 songs spanning over 160 years of music.
Its original Australian tour welcomed 1.4 million theatregoers across Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane.
Performances at the Sydney Lyric are on sale from 9 March to 30 May 2027. Tickets start at $89 with no additional booking fees. Further information and bookings are available through the Moulin Rouge! The Musical website.
