OperaQ is bringing opera and musical theatre performers together for its production of Cole Porter’s classic musical, Kiss Me, Kate at QPAC concert hall this November.

The semi-staged concerts are OperaQ’s nod to the 2016 Shakespeare celebrations. A musical play within a play, Kiss Me, Kate is the story of a theatre troupe preparing for the opening night of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The show includes dance numbers like "Too Darn Hot", choreographed. by Christopher Horsey.

Directed by Kris Stewart and conducted by Guy Noble, the concerts boast a mix of opera and musical theatre stars including Naomi Price, Jason Barry-Smith, Bryan Probets, Kurt Phelan, Shaun Brown, Christopher Horsey, Bradley McCaw, Lizzie Moore and Robert Coleby, and the Opera Queensland Chorus - all on stage with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

OperaQ enjoys a close association with Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University and will expand with Kiss me, Kate through the inclusion of 23 musical theatre students from QCGU.

OperaQ Artistic Director Lindy Hume said, since Kiss Me, Kate won the first ever Tony Award for Best Musical in 1949, it had remained one of the most loved musicals worldwide for Cole Porter’s charming songs and lyrics, brilliant characters and storyline. “It’s been almost 20 years since it was last performed in Brisbane. Our audience at the matinee and evening concerts can expect some lovely surprises in Kris Stewart’s witty staging and wonderful performances from this terrific cast," says Hume.

Kiss Me Kate will be performed at QPAC, 2pm and 8pm on Saturday 12 November 2016
