Joseph Simons, winner of the 2013 Tanja Liedtke Fellowship, will be touring his new work, First Things First to venues in regional and metropolitan New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia between March and May this year.

First Things First was developed during Simons’s Berlin residence, which took place as part of the Tanja Liedtke Fellowship. The fellowship is a prestigious award, open to professional Australian dancer/choreographers who are aged between 20 and 35. Created in memory of the late Australian dancer/choreographer Tanja Liedtke, the fellowship program takes place in Berlin and Frankfurt annually and is about creating opportunities for talented Australian artists.

As the name suggests, First Things First takes its inspiration from “first times” and new experiences. Simons explains, “I had never been to Berlin before so I thought I’d make a work about discovering a city for the first time. That gradually changed to first experiences in general.” Now the show is described as being a comedic look at first experiences and the art of ‘getting used to it’.

First Things First has already played Frankston and Rosebud (VIC).  It plays Bathurst tonight (19 March) and then heads to Dubbo (NSW), Toowoomba, Townsville and Cairns (Qld) in March; Yeppoon (Qld), Montrose, Ballarat and Swan Hill (Vic) in April; and Horsham (Vic), Marion, Port Noarlunga, Golden Grove, Woodville, Elizabeth, Hilton, Murray Bridge, Tanunda (SA), Portland and Colac (Vic) in May.
