Houston Ballet has announced that it will tour to Australia for the first time next year. The company, which is directed by Australian choreographer Stanton Welch will present his Romeo and Juliet at Arts Centre Melbourne State Theatre, 20 June to 9 July 2016.  “I am thrilled that Houston Ballet will travel to Australia for the first time,” says Welch. “It’s almost like everything has come full circle with the company performing in my homeland. Australian audiences are so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about dance and I look forward to having the chance for Houston Ballet to show Melbourne what we do here in Texas. I am sure Australian audiences will appreciate and understand the commitment and artistic excellence that we strive so hard for here.”

Houston Ballet presented the premiere of Welch’s Romeo and Juliet in February of this year. The production is set to the Prokofiev score and is designed by Italian designer  Roberta Guidi di Bagno.

Houston Ballet has a long-standing relationship with the Australian Ballet, dating back to Welch’s appointment as AD in 2003. Welch continues to hold the title of resident choreographer of the Australian Ballet and he has set up a program whereby the two companies exchange artists.
