Want to know more about the Australian Ballet? 

If you're in Sydney this April and May, there are plenty of opportunities to get to know your national flagship ballet company better.  The Australian Ballet will be presenting its Public Programs, including a range of talks, Q&A sessions, classes, workshops and theatre programs, at the Sydney Opera House.  There are 21 events for people of all ages, coinciding with the company’s seasons of Don Quixote and "Vanguard".

Listed below are some of the highlights of the program:

6 April:  McAllister in conversation
New event for 2013

Join artistic director David McAllister and his special guests for fascinating discussions about ballets, choreographers, music and much more.  Saturday 6 April 5pm and Saturday 4 May 5pm, Sydney Opera House, $15, suitable for age 10 to adult.

From 10 April:  Free pre-performance music talks
New event for 2013

Join music director and chief conductor Nicolette Fraillon before selected performances to hear insights into the composers, the scores and the magic of ballet music.  Wednesday 10 April 12pm, Friday 12 April 6pm, Friday 10 May 6pm and Friday 17 May 6pm, Sydney Opera House, Free, suitable for age 6 to adult.

13 April:  Boys’ Day

Each year, more and more boys are choosing to study dance, attracted by its athleticism and artistry. The Australian Ballet gives young male dance students aged 9 to 14 the opportunity to take an onstage class together and then to meet and talk with the male dancers of the company. Saturday 13 April 10am, Sydney Opera House, $27, for male dance students age 9 to 14.

15 April:  People’s Day

Watch the dancers take their daily class on stage, and gain a fascinating insight into the daily life of a professional dancer. Don’t forget to bring your autograph book! Monday 15 April 10am, Sydney Opera House, $20, suitable for age 10 to adult.

23 April:  Once upon a Time

A brand-new theatrical event designed especially for children featuring fully staged excerpts from the Australian Ballet's production of Don Quixote, narrated and performed by former principal artist Steven Heathcote. Colourful costumes and dynamic dancing will be backed by live music in what will be a perfect school holiday outing for families. Tuesday 23 April 11.30am, Sydney Opera House, $30 for adults and $25 for children, suitable for age 4 to adult.

5 May:  Chance to Dance

This adult beginner’s ballet class, taught by an artist of the Australian Ballet, will introduce you to the basics of ballet training. We invite you to come along and sample a plié or two. Absolutely no dance experience is necessary!  Sunday 5 May 3.30 pm, Sydney Opera House, $27, suitable for age 18 and above.
